Akron tops Medina to open N-O volleyball title defense; Roy-Hart downs Albion

Akron opened defense of its Niagara-Orleans League volleyball title by scoring a straight set 25-16, 25-17, 25-20 victory over host Medina.

Three spiking kills by Je’ne Brown did help keep Medina close at 8-6 early in the opening set but Akron used a big run of seven straight service points by Jesee Jonathan (9-15) to take charge.  Chooch Jonathan then closed out the set for the Lady Tigers by registering two spiking kills and a service ace for the final three points.

Camri King registered three straight aces to help keep Medina close at 9-7 into second set but Akron used a key run of five straight derive points by Helena Hill (10-14) to take charge.

Medina stayed even at 11-11 midway through the third set after a kill by Brown and an ace by Leah Sheelar but the Mustangs could not grab the lead.

Akron took 8 of the next 10 points capped off by a kill by Shasrah Jonathan and an ace by Hill to open up a 19-13 lead.

The teams then traded points the rest of the way as Shasrah Jonathan registered a kill for point 24 to help the Lady Tigers close out the win.

Hill had 6 kills and 4 aces, Chooch Jonathan 6 kills and 5 aces and Shaydon Thompson 17 digs for Akron.

Brown had 7 kills and Maddie Williams 1 for Medina as Elle Gross had 3 aces and Grace Masse 13 assists.

Wilson 25-27-25, Newfane 19-25-11

Jenny Meyers had 5 kills, 4 aces and 13 digs and Rachel Blasius 5 aces, 4 kills and 6 digs to lead Wilson to a straight set win over rival Newfane.

Roy-Hart 26-25-25; Albion 24-17-18
Roy-Hart bested visiting Albion 26-24, 25-17 25-18 in another N-O opener.

Aspen Moore had 7 kills and 2 blocks and Skyler Christopher 6 kills to lead Roy-Hart at the net.

At the service line, the Lady Rams has Jessi Wood with 11 points, including 3 aces, as well as 2 kills and a block, and Maddie Ciemny with 12 points, including 2 aces, 1 kill and 15 assists.

Haley Smith had 11 kills and Taylor Walczek 6 aces for Albion.

Byron-Bergen 25-25-25, Holley 11-6-15

Quinn Chapell had 5 kills and 3 aces, Catherine Brumsted 10 assists and 3 kills and Hannah VanSkiver 4 aces and 3 kills to lead Byron-Bergen to a three set victory over Holley in a Genesee Region League match.

In a non league match, Kendall dropped a 25-5, 25-9, 25-13 decision to Bishop Kearney.
