Taking charge with a big second quarter scoring surge, Akron bested Medina 17-7 at Vets Park this afternoon to take over sole possession of second place in the Class D Division standings.

Breaking away from a 3-3 deadlock, Akron erupted for five unanswered goals in the first eight minutes of the second period, including two each by Kaleb Delaney and Ryan Yaeger, to open up an 8-3 lead at the half.

The Tigers then used a 5-2 third period scoring edge, including three by Donovan Nephew, to extend the advantage to 13-5 at the three-quarter mark.

Medina had stayed even at 3-3 at the end of a sea-saw first period on goals by Christian Silversmith, Tommy Vasquez and Mitchell Silversmith.

Christian Silversmith finished with a total of four goals to become the 10th Medina player to reach the 100 goal career scoring mark. He now has a team leading total of 27 goals on the season.

Delaney finished with a total of 6 goals for Akron as Yaeger and Nephew each netted 4.

Akron is now 4-2 in the division while Medina slips to 3-3.

The Mustangs next visit Gananda on Tuesday for a non league game.
