In a near instant replay of an earlier season meeting, undefeated (8-0) defending champion Akron edged past visiting Medina 20-19 in overtime this afternoon in a Class D Division lacrosse game.

Owen Hill scored the game winner in overtime for Akron which also nipped Medina 15-14 in overtime at Vets Park earlier in the season.

Medina had tied the game at 19-19 on a goal by Tim Roy with 1:09 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Mustangs then regained possession but could not capitalize before regulation time expired.

“We had out opportunities we just couldn’t put it in the net,” said Medina Coach Gordy Luthart.

Kaleb Delaney finished with 4 goals for Akron as Hill, Donovan Nephew and Nelson Logan each netted 3.

Christian Silversmith scored 7, Mason Lewis 5, Brendan Luthart and Roy 3 and Zach Blount 1 for Medina which is now 4-3 in division competition.

Breaking away from a 6-6 tie after one period, Medina moved out to a 12-9 half-time advantage as Lewis and Luthart both scored 2 goals and Roy and Silversmith 1 each in the second quarter.

The Mustangs maintained a 15-14 lead at the three-quarter mark as Lewis, Silversmith and Roy each scored a goal in the third period.

However, Akron outscored Medina 5-4 in the final period which ended deadlocked at 19-19 forcing overtime.

Medina will next host Gowanda at 5 p.m. Thursday to close out the D Division season. The Mustangs dropped a 12-8 decision at Gowanda earlier in the season.
