Staying in the thick of the title race, Akron downed visiting Medina 55-48 in a Niagara-Orleans League boys basketball game this evening.

Improving to 9-1, Akron stays within a game of undefeated (9-0) defending champion Newfane which defeated rival Wilson 76-39.

Blake Gerstung scored 17 and Ben Gerstung 10 to set the pace for Akron.

Jerrell Nealy tallied 17, Preston Woodworth 15 and Justin Pitts 10 for Medina.

Leading 13-9 after the first period, Akron extended its lead to 16, 34-18, at the half as Blake Gerstung scored 8 to lead a 21-9 second period Tigers surge.

Medina though rallied back to within 8, 43-35, at the end of the third period as Nealy tallied 8 in the quarter.

However, free throws and a pair of threes by Blake Gerstung in the final stanza helped the Tigers lock up the win.
