Akron ousts Medina in field hockey sectionals; Barker and Wilson score wins

Top seeded Akron opened defense of its Section VI Class C field hockey title by blanking visiting No. 8 Medina 7-0 this afternoon in the quarterfinals.

The other quarterfinals saw No. 2 Barker shutout No. 7 Holland 5-0, No. 3 Wilson edge No. 6 rival Newfane 2-0 and No. 5 Eden trim No. 4 Roy-Hart 2-0.

Undefeated (13-0) Niagara-Orleans League champion Akron will now face Eden (7-10) and Barker (10-3) will take on Wilson (9-4) in Wednesday’s semifinals at Clarence. Barker and Wilson split a pair of N-O League meetings by the identical score of 2-0.

Abby Stone had the three goal hat-trick to set the pace for Akron which led 5-0 at the half. Abby Enfield chipped in with a pair of goals for the Lady Tigers as Heather and Hannah Cummings each had 1.

A three goal scoring burst in the first 10 minutes sparked Barker past Holland. Ciara Gregoire scored at 24:22 and again at 20:09 and Lydia Dewart at 23:44 during that decisive early Lady Raiders scoring burst.

Lena Fazzolari followed up with a goal at 10:41 to make it 4-0 at the half. Serena Harris then netted the Lady Raiders lone second half goal.

Cara Fox earned the shutout n goal.

Alex Seeley scored what proved to be the game winning goal for Wilson in the first half. She then assisted on an insurance goal scored by Erin Boyle in the second half.

Mia Ludwig made 26 saves in goal for Newfane to keep the Lady Panthers in the game.
