Defending champion Akron trimmed rival Barker 2-1 in a key Niagara-Orleans League field hockey season opener at Barker.

In the matchup between last year’s top two finishers, Akron got the game winning goal from Brooke Milhollen midway through the fourth quarter snapping 1-1 deadlock.

Akron also scored first as Madigan Regan tallied late in the opening quarter.

Barker knotted the score just before halftime on a penalty stroke goal by Madelina Pavlock but could not score again.

In the another N-O openers, Wilson downed visiting Roy-Hart 4-1 and Newfane bested Kenmore 2-1 in a shootout.

Natalie Rossi and Mackenzie Hardy each scored two goals for Wilson.

Savannah Newton scored the Roy-Hart goal.

Kylie Hampton and Roxy Smith scored the shootout goals for Newfane.

Barker’s Madelina Pavlock looks to drive between Akron’s duo of Julia Klodzinski (21) and Madigan Regan (9).
