Akron netters upend Albion
Continuing a late season surge, Akron upended champion Albion 3-2 1/2 this afternoon in a Niagara-Orleans League tennis match.
Three set wins at third singles by Nathan Chubb, 1-6, 7-6, 6-3 over Dan Beam and at second doubles by Cierra Janis and Jacob Meyer, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 over Cristal Quintana and Michael Stilwell keyed Akron to the victory.
Now at 7-4, Akron also took the second singles as Ryan Meek downed Josh Metzler 6-4, 6-3.
Albion took the first singles as Dyer Benjovsky bested Tyler Kelly 7-6, 6-0.
The Purple Eagles also got wins at first doubles as Monica Benjovsky and Kyler McQuillan downed Brandon Meek and Dustin Earl 6-4, 6-0 and at third doubles as Dylan Bader and Matt Kovaleski topped Morgan Wagner and Erica Papke 6-4, 6-0.
Albion, which had already locked up outright possession of the N-O title, finishes the league campaign at 9-3.
Akron, which knocked defending champion Medina out of title contention on Monday, will close out the N-O season against Wilson on Wednesday.
Roy-Hart 3 1/2, Barker 2
Roy-Hart (2-10) upended Barker (7-5) 3 1/2-2 as come-from-behind wins by Valeria Sillar 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 over Sean Benoit 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 at first singles and by Elliot Spitzer 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 over Brian Hefferon at third singles keyed the victory for the Rams.
Roy-Hart also won at first doubles as Quinn Moreland and Patrick Sheelar downed Erik Herian and Nick Fazzolari 6-3, 6-2 and at third doubles as Denzel Flowers and Kelsey Elridge topped Paige Fudella and Patricia Bautista 6-7, 6-3, 6-1.
Barker took the second singles as Tristan Payne defeated Jarod Shepard 6-1, 6-1 and the second doubles as Lucy Bautista and Emma Duffy downed Jamie Swick and Jon Eggert 7-5, 7-5.
Wilson 5 1/2, Newfane 0
Wilson blanked rival Newfane 5 1/2-0 to improve to 7-4.
In the singles matches for Wilson, Dominic Curicone defeated Jeremy Ribbeck 6-1,6-2; Gabriel Curcione downed Terell Atkins 6-1, 6-2 and Alex Keil topped Nick Kozial 6-0, 6-0.
In the doubles competition for the Lakemen, Kalle Olear and Joe Hecko defeated Casey Gregory and Delany Wasik 6-1, 6-1; Michale Pazik and Kyle Lyon downed Joe Swogier and Cameron Seib 6-1, 2-6, 6-4; and Kierson Skobjak and Marlowe Recht bested Whitney Atkins and Zach Russell 6-4, 2-6, 7-6.
