Akron girls top Medina; Albion, Wilson win

A big third quarter scoring surge keyed Akron to a 59-44 win over host Medina in a Niagara-Orleans League girls basketball game this evening.

Breaking away from a 25-25 half-time deadlock, Akron outscored Medina 22-8 in the decisive third period to open up 47-33 advanttage. Sloan Jonathan scored 12 to lead that Lady Tigers uprising.

Medina, which failed to score from the field in the third quarter, could get no closer than 8 in the final period.

Jonathan finished with 16, Aubrianne Baltzley 11 and Olivia Novak 9 to lead the way for Akron which snapped a two game losing streak and improved to 7-3 in N-O action.

Iyla Lilleby took game high honors with 25 for Medina as Alexa Demmer added 9, Honesty Hill 6, Angel Mulcahy 3 and Nevaeh Moss 1.

Medina did get off to a quick start jumping out to a 12-1 lead at the outset as Lilleby scored 10.

However, Akron got right back in the game by answering with a 12-2 run to close the period and slice the deficit to one at 14-13. Jonathan, Novak and Lexie Ground each scored four to lead that rally.

The Lady Tigers then outpointed the Mustangs 12-11 in the second period to pull even at 25-25 at the half.

Albion 45, Barker 28
Albion improved to 5-4 in N-O competition with 45-28 win at Barker which slips to 0-9.

Madison Hughson took game high honors with 26 for Albion which led 26-8 at the half.

Wilson 49, Newfane 20
Defending champion Wilson posted a 49-20 victory over rival Newfane to notch its 70th straight Niagara-Orleans win and clinch at least a tie for a sixth straight league title.

Rian Faery scored 13 and Peyton McInnis 11 for Wilson which improves to 9-0 in N-O action to take a three game lead with just three games remaining.

The Lakewomen have now claimed the N-O crown 14 of the last 15 years.
