Akron, Barker win to stay 1-2 in field hockey

Akron’s Jenelle Kiefer and Roy-Hart’s Amanda Hill battle for control of the ball during this morning’s Niagara-Orleans League game at Middleport which was won by the visiting Lady Tigers.

Front-running Akron downed host Roy-Hart 2-0 this morning to stay undefeated at 5-0 in Niagara-Orleans League field hockey competition.

Runner-up Barker improved to 4-1 with a 7-0 home field victory over Kenmore.

In the other contest, Wilson boosted its record to 2-3 by blanking rival Newfane (1-3) 3-0.

Lacey Berghorn scored Akron’s first goal.

Lacey Berghorn scored what proved to be the game winning goal for Akron at 7:19 of the second quarter and Madison Brege tacked on an insurance tally at 1:38 of the third quarter.

The Lady Tigers had a whopping 17-0 advantage in corner opportunities.

Barker, which got goals from seven different players, built up a 3-0 half-time advantage as Lena Fazzolari scored off an assist from Madison Gancasz, Gancasz tallied unassisted and Aaliyah Wheat scored from Kaedynce Schumacher.

In the second half the Lady Raiders got goals from Rachel Sutter, Schumacher, Mia Herman and Alexa Zglinicki.

The loss drops Kenmore to 1-2-1.

Anna Meyers scored all three goals for Wilson in the fourth quarter.

N-O Standings: Akron 5-0, Barker 4-1, Roy-Hart 2-3, Wilson 2-3, Kenmore 1-2-1, Newfane 1-3, Medina 0-3-1.

Monday’s Schedule: Medina at Wilson, 4:30 p.m.; Newfane at Akron, 4:30 p.m.; Roy-Hart at Kenmore 6 p.m.
