The Akron girls softball team has undertaken an ambitious project to collect enough used softball equipment to fill a cargo plane and ship it to Bani, Dominican Republic in order to form, a girls softball league. Here the Akron team accepts donations to their “Just DOnate IT” project from members of the Roy-Hart team prior to a recent Niagara-Orleans League game between the squads. The Akron team is undertaking the project in collaboration with the Hilbert College Rotaract Club as Bani is Buffalo’s sister city in the Dominican Republic. The team is looking for donations of softballs, bats, mitts, sneakers, cleats, uniforms, catching equipment, batting helmets and equipment bags plus and school supplies including backpacks. “Our local community is extremely supportive of our athletes,” said Akron Coach Marlene Stone.  “This project will provide an opportunity for our athletes to give an underprivileged community in the Dominican Republic a chance to enjoy the sport our team loves.” Any one interested in helping can e-mail justdonatesoftball@gmail.com with information about the items to be donated.
