Medina romps to diamond tourney title
Romping to a pair of lopsided victories, Medina took top honors in the Mustangs baseball tournament today at rainy Vets Park.
Marathon 10 run innings keyed both wins as Medina blanked Holley 15-0 in the opening round and then thumped Oakfield-Alabama 23-1 in the championship game.
Medina struck for 10 quick runs in the first inning to key the win over Holley. A leadoff home run by Brian Fry ignited that marathon frame which also highlighted by a two-run double by Trevor Luthart, a double by Fry and an RBI single by Joe Cecchini.
Then in the championship game, Medina broke away from a narrow 2-1 lead by exploding for 10 runs in the third inning ignited by a leadoff double by Xander Payne and highlighted by a two-run double by AJ Seefeldt, a two-run single by Luthart and an RBI single by Nate Sherman.
The Mustangs then erupted for 11 more runs in the fourth frame as Sherman had a two-run triple, Seefeldt a two-run double, Payne an RBI double and Chris Goyette and Aidan Paul RBI singles for a 23-1 lead.
Luthart pitched the first four innings allowing 3 hits and striking out 8. Fry came on to strike out the side in the fifth.
Aidan Johnston had an RBI triple in the first inning for the Hornets lone run.
Oakfield-Alabama defeated Pembroke 11-0 in the other semifinal. Pembroke rebounded to down Holley 16-4 in the consolation contest.
Now at 3-0 Medina next hosts Batavia at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in a non league game.
