Albion spikers nipped by East Aurora in semis

Highlighted by a overtime third set win, No. 2 seed East Aurora edged past visiting No. 3 Albion 25-23, 25-19, 29-27 this evening in the semifinal round of the Section VI Class B1 volleyball playoffs.

Albion built up a 22-15 lead in the decisive third set as Sierra Newton served up points 20-22, two of which were aces.

However, East Aurora answered with a big run of 9 straight points (16-24) to rally into a 24-22 lead.

Albion though retied the set four times at 24-24, 25-25, 26-26 and finally at 27-27 before East Aurora put together the deciding two set and match winning points. Haley Smith had spike kills to pull Albion even at 24-24 and at 27-27 as did Chanyce Powell at 25-25.

Albion likewise dropped a narrow two point decision in the opening set after rallying into a 23-23 tie as Caitlynn Snook served up points 21-23.

Powell finished with 11 kills, 5 blocks and 2 digs; Emilie Barleben 12 assists, 7 digs and 2 kills; Kaitlyn Van Skiver 6 kills; Newton 6 digs and 2 aces and Smith and Snook 2 kills each.

In the Class B2 semifinals, No. 2 Alden defeated visiting No. 6 Roy-Hart in straight sets 25-22, 25-16, 25-16.

Olivia Vorholzer and Skyler Christopher both had 7 kills and Bea Bacon 5 for Roy-Hart.

In a Class C2 semi, Eden bested top seeded Niagara-Orleans League champion Akron in three sets.

Section VI Class B Finals
Niagara-Orleans League champion Newfane blanked Fredonia 3-0 this evening to capture the Section VI Class B championship and advance to the Far West Regionals.

Kayleigh Daniels scored 2 goals and Lila Maurer 1 for Newfane.

Newfane advanced by capturing the Class B1 title with a 3-0 win over East Aurora while Fredonia claimed the Class B2 crown with a 1-0 win over Wilson.
