Severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 9 p.m. for Orleans, most of WNY

Garrett Knaak sent in this photo from 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday of a shelf cloud on Clarendon Road in Albion. This cloud is a low and a horizontal, wedge-shaped cloud that appears at the leading edge of a thunderstorm’s gust front. It signals sudden strong winds and a dramatic drop in temperature.
The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m. for Orleans County and much of Western New York.
The Weather Service also issued a beach hazards statement from Sunday morning through Tuesday evening, warning that strong currents will create dangerous swimming conditions at beaches in Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, northern Cayuga, Oswego and Jefferson counties.
