Albion wins softball sectional opener

A four run first inning proved to be enough as No. 8 seed Albion went on to defeat visiting No. 9 Cheektowaga 5-1 this afternoon in the opening round of the Section VI Class A softball playoffs.
A home run by Cami London highlighted the decisive opening inning which also including a run producing bunt by Kaitlyn Bennett.
Rori Higgins also hit a solo home run for the Purple Eagles in the sixth inning.
Defensively, Bennett keyed a double play in the fourth inning.
Alana Irvine earned the win in the circle as she allowed only 2 hits and struck out 5.
Albion will next visit top seeded Williamsville South on Thursday.
Roy-Hart 10, Tonawanda 9
No. 5 seed Roy-Hart edged visiting No. 12 Tonawanda in a Class B opening round contest.
Trailing 9-6, Roy-Hart rallied for 4 runs in the sixth inning as Millie Owens had a two-run single, Brooke Corser an RBI double and winning pitcher Abby Fox and RBI single.
Fox had a total of 3 hits as Hayley Hillburn and Kaitlin Mettler both had 2. Mettler’s hits included a triple.
Wilson 5, East Aurora 4
No. 7 seed Wilson likewise edged No. 10 East Aurora 5-4 in another Class B opener as Rowan Simpson singled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Newfane 16, Performing Arts 1
Erupting for 7 runs in the first inning, No. 14 seed Newfane went on to defeat No. 3 Performing Arts 16-1 in a Class B opener.
Bailee Patcyk and Kami Boyer each had 2 hits for the Lady Panthers as Emma Shaughnessy picked up the win in the circle allowing 1 hit and striking out 7.
