In an overtime thriller, top seeded Akron captured a fifth straight Section VI Class C field hockey championship by nipping No. 7 Eden 3-2 at Alden this evening.

Morgan Tomporowski’s third goal of the evening with 2:57 remaining in the first 10 minute 7 on 7 overtime period provided the margin of victory for Akron.

Akron also got on the scoreboard first as Tomporowski tallied late in the opening period.

However, Eden answered back with a pair of second period goals by Sophia Max and Kylie Wegrzynowski, the later coming with just 16 seconds remaining, to take a 2-1 lead at the half.

Akron battled back to tie the game on a goal by Tomporowski with just 13 seconds to go in the third period.

Neither team could find the range in the fourth quarter setting the stage for the deciding overtime period.

Akron defender Madison Gates came back to make a huge save in front of the goal in the overtime period to keep the contest tied.

Akron advanced to the finals by downing No. 4 Medina 4-0 in the semifinals.

Eden reached the title contest by upending No. 2 Barker 2-1 in the quarterfinals and No. 3 Roy-Hart 6-5 in the semifinals.

Akron will now face Section III champion Clinton in the opening round of the state playoffs at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Webster Schroeder High School.
