Making a successful title defense, Barre bested Sandstone 11-5 in the Albion Midget League playoff championship game this afternoon at the Midget League Field.

Trailing 2-1, Barre took the lead for good at 5-2 by scoring four times in the bottom of the third inning highlighted by a three-run home run by Zandyr Meakin. Two walks, a pair of errors and a single by Cade Wolcott also helped to key the scoring burst.

Barre then pulled away to an 11-2 advantage by scoring once in the fourth on a single by Jacob Foote and five times in the fifth as Meakin had a two-run single and Wolcott an RBI single. A walk and singles by Tyler Gibson and Jason Conn ignited that uprising.

Meakin finished with a total of 3 hits including an RBI double in the first inning. Wolcott and Conn both added 2 hits and James Michael Beach 1.

Gibson picked up the win on the mound as he scattered 5 hits and struck out 7 in 5 innings of work.

Defensively, Meakin teamed up with Conn to turn a double play in the third inning.

Sandstone grabbed an early 2-1 lead by scoring once in the first on a single by Nick Martino and once in the third on a combination of a single by Zack Colacecchi, a double by Caleb Fox and an error.

Jake Hughson and Elliot Trapiss also both had hits for Sandstone whose other three runs came in the sixth on bases loaded walks.

Barre advanced to the title game by defeating Rotary 6-4 in the semifinals while Sandstone downed St. Mary’s 14-6.

Barre’s Tyler Gibson slides into third base as Sandstone’s Kyle Vanameron awaits the throw.

Sandstone defenders Chris Sacco (20) and Elliot Trapiss (1) go after the ball as Barre’s Zandyr Meakin stands on second base.
