Albion girls upend W-C in tourney opener

Photo by Cheryl Wertman – Chanyce Powell scored 10 for Albion this evening in the Purple Eagles semifinal tournament win over host Wheatland-Chili.

CHILI – Jumping out to an 11-3 first quarter lead, Albion went on to defeat the host school 42-28 this evening in the semifinal round of the Wheatland-Chili girls basketball tournament.

Mandi Covis and Sarah Metzler both scored four points to lead Albion in the opening quarter.

Up 17-12 at the half, Albion broke the game open in the third period outscoring W-C 15-6 in the third period.

Metzler netted 5 and Justice Nauden and Chanyce Powell 4 each to lead the way during that uprising as the Purple Eagles opened up a 32-18 advantage heading into the final period.

Metzler finished with 13, Powell 10, Nauden 7, Emily Blanchard 6, Covis 4 and Jayne Bannister 2.

Albion will play Caledonia-Mumford in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
