Medina spikers win five set thriller

In a sea-saw battle Medina outlasted visiting Wilson in five sets this evening 16-25, 25-9, 25-20, 17-25, 25-21 in a Niagara-Orleans League volleyball match.

Medina rallied from an early 7-0 deficit in the deciding fifth set to claim the win as Nicole Blount had a key run of eight straight service points (8-15) to rally the Mustangs into a 15-10 lead.

Wilson did briefly retie the set at 19-19 but Molley Gross answered right back with a clutch run of four straight points (21-24) to rally Medina back into the lead for good at 24-19.

Blount then made a key spiking kill for the final point to close out the set and the match.

“They did a real nice job of rallying back,” said Medina Coach Tim Lincoln of his Mustangs . “They kept battling.”

Wilson took the opening set 25-16 but Medina battled back to knot the contest by taking the second set 25-9 as Carley Schultz served up points 5-7, Blount 9-14 and Emily Kams 19-20.

Keeping the momentum, the Mustangs then took the third set 25-20 to grab a 2-1 lead in the match as Blount served up points 21-25 registering an ace for the set winner.

However, Wilson rebounded to knot the match at 2-2 by taking the fourth set 25-17 as Serina Jaeger-Delgado had a key run of five straight points (17-21) to give the visitors a 21-11 lead.

Wilson kept rolling at the outset of the fifth and deciding set as Kelly Secor served up the first seven points.

However, Medina came battling back one more time as Gross served up points 2-3 and Schultz 5-6 to keep the Mustangs close before Blount put together the match’s longest run of eight straight points to rally the Mustangs into the lead at 15-10. Gross tacked on points 21-24 and Blount registered a kill to cap off the big rally.

Medina is now 1-1 and Wilson 0-2 in N-O action.

Defending champion Albion posted a three set victory at Roy-Hart as Kelsee Soule had 8 kills, 7 digs and 3 aces, Chanyce Powell 6 kills, 2 aces and 3 blocks, Sara Millspaugh 4 kills, and 3 aces, Meghan Hurley 4 digs and 15 assists and Olivia Neidert 4 digs and 4 assists.

Sarah Meal had 6 kills and Bea Bacon 3 blocks for Roy-Hart.

Albion is now 2-0 and Roy-Hart 1-1.

Erica Wright had 15 kills and 21 digs and Vicki Harrington 7 kills and 5 aces to lead Newfane (2-0) to a five set win over Akron (0-1).
