Medina/Lyndonville booters shutout Roy-Hart to capture N-O championship
Making history for two school districts, Medina/Lyndonville captured the Niagara-Orleans League boys soccer championship with a 4-0 victory over Roy-Hart at Gasport this evening.
Brian Anderson scored two goals and Kristian Snyder and Steven Anderson each added one as Medina/Lyndonville, in its third season as a merged team, claimed its first N-O title finishing the league campaign with a 9-2-1 record.
The Mustangs edged out both Wilson (9-3) and Newfane (8-3-1) in a tight three-way race to claim the historic title.
“It’s a surreal feeling. These kids just love to play soccer and they just play great together. The merged team has really been a great thing for both schools,” said Medina/Lyndonville Coach Steve Luksch. “This league is really tough and it’s been a grind so winning the championship is a real accomplishment. And it’s been by everybody. We’ve gotten contributions from a lot of guys in winning it.”
Medina/Lyndonville grabbed a 1-0 lead on a goal by Brian Anderson at the 17 minute mark of the first half off an assist from Collin Dunn.
It remained a tight 1-0 game until Snyder scored his fourth goal of the season 10 minutes into the second half off an assist from James Ianni.
The Mustangs lead quickly jumped to 3-0 just five minutes later when Steven Anderson scored his 11th goal of the season.
Brian Anderson rounded out the Mustangs scoring when he netted his 14th goal of the campaign on a penalty kick with 10 minutes remaining.
Justin Morgan earned the shutout in goal for the Mustangs.
Roy-Hart finishes the N-O season at 4-8.
Prior to the merger of the two schools varsity teams, Medina won an N-O title in 1992 and Lyndonville claimed a Genesee Region League title in 1986.
Now at 11-3-1 overall, Medina/Lyndonville is slated to face Niagara Catholic at 10 a.m.Saturday at Lyndonville to close out the regular season.
Newfane 4, Akron 1
Jon George, Trevor Moreland, Chad Gilson and Clayton Clevely each scored a goal as Newfane (8-3-1) downed Akron (7-5).
Wilson 7, CSAT 0
Josh VanBuren scored three goals and Cesar Carlin two to lead Wilson (9-3-0) at CSAT (0-12) 7-0.
