Lancers outlast Mustang stickmen
Unable to overcome a half-time deficit, Medina dropped a free scoring 15-12 decision to Lew-Port this evening in a Class C Division lacrosse game at Vets Park.
Breaking away from a 2-2 deadlock, Lew-Port outscored Medina 4-1 in the second period to open up a 6-3 half-time advantage.
Medina had stayed even in the opening period on goals by Greg Husung and Tyler Valley but managed only a lone tally by Kyle Barna in the second period.
Back-to-back goals by Valley did pull Medina to within one at 6-5 early in the third period but the Mustangs would get no closer.
The Lancers answered right back with a burst of five unanswered goals to open up an 11-5 advantage.
Barna finally ended that run with a goal in the final 40 seconds to cut the Medina deficit a bit to11-6 at the three-quarter mark.
Medina did rally back to within three at 11-8 at the outset of the final period on goals by Dylan Lewis and Barna only to see Lew-Port quickly get those two right back and regain a five goal, 13-8, advantage.
Medina did come battling back one last time with a 4-1 scoring burst on three goals by Barna and one by Valley but the closest the Mustangs could get was 14-12 with three minutes to go.
Barna finished with a total of six goals and Valley four.
Now at 1-5 in the division and 4-6 overall, Medina next hosts Salamanca at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in another Class C Division contest.
The victory was the first in 11 starts for Lew-Port.
