Mustangs top rival Purple Eagles to go to 8-0

Completing an 8-0 regular season, Medina downed Albion 38-8 at Vets Park this evening in the 125th renewal of one of New York State’s oldest high school football rivalries.

The Mustangs took control in the first half scoring on 4 of 5 possessions to open up a 24-0 lead at the break.

Medina grabbed a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 15 yard touchdown run by Christian Moss as Cole Callard tacked on the first of his 5 extra point kicks.

An interception by Justin Pitts set up the scoring drive which was highlighted by runs of 25 yards by Brody Fry and 16 by Moss.

The Mustangs then broke the contest open with 17 points in the second quarter on TD runs of 1 yard by Moss and 4 yards by Noah Cudzilo and a 34 yard field goal by Callard.

Moss, who rushed for 196 yards on the evening to top the 1,000 yard mark on the season, had a 24 yard run to key the first drive and a pick up of 32 yards to highlight the second.

A pass interception by Kaedon Cleveland set up the opportunity for Callard’s field goal.

The Mustangs tacked on two touchdowns in the fourth quarter on runs of 3 yards by Moss and 6 yards by Cudzilo.

A fumble recovery by Xavier King set up the opportunity for the first score and a 49 yard run by Cudzilo keyed the second drive.

Cudzilo then capped off the win with an interception in the final minute.

Albion’s touchdown came late in the fourth quarter on a an 8 yard pass from quarterback Blake Preston to Kyle Radder. Preston added the two-point conversion on a pass to Auston Johnson. A 23 yard Preston to Radder pass completion ignited the drive.

The evening featured the induction of Karl Barna and the late Kyle Barna into the John “Pinky” Loughlin Football Wall of Fame in pregame ceremonies and the presentation of the Doc’s Rock trophy to the victorious Mustangs in postgame ceremonies. The trophy is given annually to the winner of the rivalry contest in memory of Larry “Doc” Decker who taught and coached at both schools.

Medina will next host a Section VI Class C quarterfinal game next weekend.
