Mustangs rebound to score key N-O victory over Panthers
Just reversing the score of a road loss on Monday, Medina edged past Newfane 2-1 at Vets Park this evening to regain a two game lead a top the Niagara-Orleans League baseball standings.
Newfane, which handed Medina its first N-O loss by a 2-1 magin on Monday, jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning as Nick Olay singled and came home on a single by Kyle Jurek.
However, Medina pitcher Jason Hellwig blanked the Panthers the rest of the way on 3 more scattered hits and 6 strikeouts.
The Mustangs scored the only two runs they needed in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Kyle Herman and an error.
Herman and Josh Scroger each had 2 hits on the evening.
Newfane did get a runner to second with one out in the top of the seventh but Hellwig got out of trouble with a strikeout and a ground out to put a lock on the win.
Medina is now 7-1 in N-O action while Newfane slips to 5-3 and into a virtual four-way tie for second place with defending champion Albion at 5-3, Akron at 4-3 and CSAT at 4-3.
Akron dropped an 11-3 decision to CSAT this afternoon as the Tigers stranded 10 runners. Connor Riggs and John Nowakowski each had 3 hits for the Tigers.
Medina next visits Albion at 4:45 p.m. Friday.
