Lyndonville, Holley clinch G-R Division diamond titles

Lyndonville edged past visiting Notre Dame 9-8 this afternoon to lock up a second straight Genesee Region League Division II title.

Holley captured the G-R Division I crown with a 5-2 victory over visiting Alexander.

Breaking away from an 8-8 deadlock, Lyndonville scored the game winner in the bottom of the sixth as Chris Scroger walked, stole second and came home on a suicide squeeze by Eddie Schildt.

‘It’s always nice for the boys,” said Lyndonville Coach Shane Price. “We got a lot of effort from our seniors and from our sophomores.”

Lyndonville had built up as much as an 8-2 lead after scoring 6 times in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Eric Neace, three bases loaded walks and a two-run single by Jacob Hoffee.

However, Notre Dame got right back in the game by answering with 5 runs in the top of the fourth. The Irish then briefly retied the game at 8-8 with a tally in the top of the sixth.

Hoffee, Ty Hrovat and Trevor Bentley each had 2 hits on the day for Lyndonville which improves to 8-3 in the league (12-4 overall).

The loss drops the Irish to 6-4 and out of title contention.

Holley 5, Alexander 2

Breaking away from a 2-2 deadlock, Holley moved on top to stay by scoring twice in the fourth inning on a two-run double by Josh Porter. A single by Jon Bower and a walk set up the threat.

“The game was big for us,” said Holley Coach Jason Cole. “After the loss to Attica the other day we needed it.”

Porter and Bower each had a total of 3 hits on the day.

Joe DeFelice went the distance on the mound for the Hawks scattering 5 hits and striking out 7.

The win boosts Holley’s league record to 9-2 (13-4 overall).
