Lyndonville Bd. of Ed. approves adding boys volleyball

Boys volleyball will be returning to the Lyndonville sports program for the first time since the mid 1970’s this fall after receiving Board of Education approval for both varsity and JV teams Thursday evening.

Filling a void in the sports program for Lyndonville which does not currently host a boys fall varsity sport, the boys volleyball will be a merged sport with Medina.

The Medina Board of Education will be voting on boys volleyball at its meeting on Aug. 18.

The Lyndonville Board also approved coaching positions for the new teams. Kevin Laskey, who has coached the Lyndonville girls varsity team the last few years, will coach the new boys varsity squad. James Zeliff will coach the JV team if there are sufficient numbers for a JV squad. Kerry Papaj, who previously coached the girls varsity team, will return to that position.

“We’re really excited about the opportunity for both districts to offer this positive experience for the boys,” said Lyndonville Athletic Director Lee Dillenbeck. “It will all be new but it will be a good, positive experience and we really look forward to making great strides.”

The team will compete in Section V but since the Genesee Region League does not have boys volleyball it will play a non league schedule.

Lyndonville is scheduled to make its debut at home on September 9 against Pavilion. The team also has a match scheduled to be played at Medina on September 21 against Wayne Central.

Volleyball becomes the fifth merged sport under the shared services agreement between the two districts but the first to be hosted by Lyndonville. Medina serves as the host school for football, boys varsity soccer, cross-country and track.
