Akron tips Broncos in key contest

Scoring a late touchdown, Akron nipped the Medina Broncos 19-13 Saturday at Vets Park in a key early season Niagara Orleans Football Association JV Division clash of unbeatens.

Medina defeated Akron in the other two games as the Colts won 21-6 and the Stallions 49-12.

Trailing 12-6, the Broncos rallied into a 13-12 lead in the fourth quarter on a 3 yard touchdown run by Iverson Poole who also added the extra point carry. A 34-yard pass completion from Poole to Lavonn Guy on a halfback option play keyed that drive.

However, Akron capitalized on a turnover and a long run to rally for the late game winning touchdown.

The Broncos other touchdown came in the first half on an 18 yard pass from quarterback Xander Payne to Guy. A pair of 17 yard pass completions from Payne to Jaren Rhim sparked that drive.

Payne had 123 yards passing on the day while Poole had 98 yards rushing and 68 receiving.

On defense, Zack Oliver made 6 tackles, Chris Johnson, Ricky Lilly and Robert Arnold 5, Guy 4 and Josh Wilson 3. Oliver and Wilson also had fumble recoveries.

The Broncos are now 2-1 and Akron 3-0.

Colts 21, Akron 6

Logan Gray scored two touchdowns on runs of 96 and 30 yards and Julian Woodworth had a 40 yard TD carry to spark the attack as the Colts snapped a season opening two game losing streak.

Gray also ran for an extra point and Sawyer Kingsbury passed to Brody Fry for a two-point conversion.

Defensively, Caiden Class had 2 fumble recoveries and Kingsbury and Liam Castricone sacks. Castricone had a total of 10 tackles, Gray 9, Kingsbury 6, Class and Brandon Christiaansen 5 and Jack Nesbitt 4.

Stallions 49, Akron 12

Roaring out to a commanding 34-6 half-time advantage the Stallions went on to defeat Akron 49-12 and likewise snap a season opening two game losing streak.

Brian Fry hooked up with Tyler Chinn for three first half touchdown passes on completions of 23, 30 and 17 yards to spark the Stallions attack.

Fry completed 9 of 16 passes for 181 yards on the night as Chinn caught 5 for 113 yards.

Sydney Brown led the Stallions ground attack by rushing for 126 yards and three touchdowns on carries of 2, 38 and 54 yards.

Emmanual Taylor also chipped in with a 20 yard TD run.

Brown, Mario Fidanza and DaShawn Grace each ran for an extra point and Chinn caught a pair of two-point conversion passes.

On defense, Fidanza had 6 tackles and 2 fumble recoveries.
