Tigers edge past Blue Devils

Turning back a strong fourth quarter challenge, Lyndonville nipped visiting Attica 59-57 this evening in a Genesee region League boys basketball game.

Up by 10, 46-36, at the end of the third period, Lyndonville saw Attica open the decisive final period with a 13-2 run, the first 7 by Colden George, to rally into what proved to be a brief 49-48 lead.

Answering the challenge, Lyndonville quickly regained the lead for good at 50-49 on two free throws by Nick Hinkson.

The Tigers then upped the advantage to 56-51 as Corey Hydock buried two straight huge threes from the corner.

A jumper by Hinkson, with what proved to be the game winning shot, kept Lyndonville up 58-53 and Zach Johnson tacked on a big free throw with eight seconds remaining to give the Tigers a four point lead at 59-55 after a layup by Colden George had pulled the Blue Devils to within two.

Hydock led Lyndonville’s balanced attack with 20 as Hinkson and Johnson both had 11, Eddie Schildt 10 and Eric Neace 7.

George had 23, including 13 in the fourth quarter, and Thompson 20, including 9 in the third period, for Attica.

Lyndonville jumped out to a 17-13 first quarter lead as Johnson hit two threes and Hinkson one as Schildt and Hydock both chipped in with a pair of baskets.

The Tigers maintained a narrow 28-27 lead at the half on two late free throws by Hinkson at then end of a sea-saw second quarter which saw three ties and six lead changes.

The Tigers moved back out to a 10 point, 46-36, advantage at the three-quarter mark has Hydock had a three and two layups, Johnson a three and Hinkson, Neace and Schildt one bucket each in the third period.

Lyndonville then survived Attica’s big fourth quarter challenge to improve to 3-2 in the league and 6-4 overall.

Attica is now 6-3.
