Medina girls tip basketball season off

Medina tipped off the local high school basketball season this evening as the Mustangs dropped a 39-28 decision to visiting Health Sciences in a non league girls contest.
Trailing 18-7 at the end of a cold shooting (2 of 32), turnover filled (14) first half, Medina came battling back in the third period.
Getting 7 points from Gracie Hughes, including a three, and 5 from Anya Bloom, Medina rallied back to within five twice late in the third period, first at 21-16 and again at 23-18, but could get no closer.
Health Sciences went back up by nine, 28-19, at the three-quarter mark.
The Mustangs did close the gap to six, 30-24, early in the final period after a basket by Nodia Osby and a three by Janiyah Holloway but Health Sciences answered with a key 7-2 run to put a lock on the win.
“We played better in the second half for sure,” said Mustangs Coach Larry Lash.
Hughes led Medina with 9 points as Vanderwalker and Bloom both had 5, Osby 4, Holloway 3 and Carrie Janas 2.
Rashanay Brooks and Myriah Beasley shared game high scoring honors for Health Sciences by each netting 12.
Medina next visits Tonawanda on December 3.
