Making a three run first inning scoring burst hold up, No. 3 seed Medina blanked No. 14 CSAT 3-0 in the opening round of the Section VI Class B1 baseball playoffs at wind swept Vets Park this afternoon.

Run producing singles by AJ Seefeldt and winning pitcher Zach Fike along with an RBI sacrifice bunt by Joe Cecchini in the first inning proved to be all the Mustangs would need. A leadoff single by Brian Fry ignited that uprising which also included a single by Chris Goyette.  Fry and Cecchini both had two hits on the day.

Fike pitched the first five innings giving up just 1 hit and striking out 8. Goyette came on to hurl the final two frames allowing no hits and striking out 4.

The Medina defense turned a double play in the fifth inning from Fike to Goyette at second to Trevor Luthart at first.

CSAT did get two runners aboard in the sixth and seventh innings, both times on an error and a walk. However, Goyette got out of trouble with two strikeouts and a grounder back to the mound in the sixth and on a force out at third and a strikeout in the seventh.

Medina, which improves to 16-2, will next host  No. 12 Newfane, which upended No. 6 Tonawanda 7-2, in the B1 quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Friday.
