Mustangs score win over Panthers in Section VI Class D lacrosse playoff opener

Getting goal production from nine different players, No. 4 seeded Medina defeated No. 5 Newfane 18-9 in the quarterfinal round of the Section VI Class D lacrosse playoffs this afternoon at Vets Park.

The victory sends Medina into a semifinal meeting at top seeded Salamanca on Thursday.

Zach Blount scored 4 goals to lead Medina’s scoring parade as Cayden Lilleby and Chaise Prest both netted 3, Mitchell Silversmith and Tommy Vasquez 2 and Cooper Fearby, Daniel Mandujuano, Mark Reigle and Austin Lovewell 1 each.

John Sylvies took game high scoring honors for Newfane with 7 goals.

Medina jumped out to a 6-1 first quarter lead as Vasquez scored two goals and Lilleby, Blount, Silversmith and Prest one each.

Two goals each by Prest and Blount in the second period helped keep the Mustangs up by a 10-3 margin at the half.

Medina maintained a 13-5 advantage at the three-quarter mark after third period goals by Blount, Lilleby and Prest.

The lacrosse meeting was the first ever between the Mustangs and Panthers who are in their first season of varsity competition after several years at the club level.

The Mustangs are now 7-10.
