MEDINA – The Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program (FLYAP) held a Signing Day at the Orleans Career and Technical Education Center (OCTEC) Tuesday to celebrate nearly a dozen students. The Orleans Niagara BOCES has participated in each of the FLYAP’s three years.

Eleven seniors are in the middle of their paid co-ops at eight companies throughout the Orleans-Niagara region. All are in the Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering program at OCTEC where they are learning CNC Machining, fabrication and more.

Those seniors include Bryan Baes (Royalton-Hartland), Xavier Fisher (Medina), Dominick Green (Albion), Christopher Kerr (Newfane), Jacob Lundy (Newfane), Michael Page (Newfane), Michael Pasquale (Newfane), Tanner Preston (Albion), Charles Rickard (Royalton-Hartland), Nate Sauls (Newfane) and Bobby Vidovich (Medina).

“OCTEC prepares these students for everything from ‘Matching Day’ interviews, to on-the-job skills to post high school career readiness,” said RTMA Director of Workforce Development, Rich Turner.  “We are proud to add these 11 students to the FLYAP family as they are all excelling at their paid co-ops throughout the region.”

The Orleans Niagara BOCES was one of the first schools to join FLYAP. To date, nearly 140 students have participated in job shadows and paid co-ops through the Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program. “We want to extend a special thank you to the companies who are working with our students,” says Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering teacher Bill Rakonczay.

Those companies include Custom Laser, E&R Machine, J.W. Burg Machine and Tool, Niagara Precision, Nuclear Alloys, Performance Manufacturing, Phinney Tool & Die and Voss Manufacturing.
