Sandstone edges past St. Mary’s
Albion Midget League playoffs
No. 2 seed Sandstone pushed across a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to nip visiting No. 7 St. Mary’s 4-3 this evening in the quarterfinal round of the Albion Midget League playoffs.
Rylend Callicutt belted his second home run of the evening for the decisive run for Sandstone which next hosts No. 6 Carlton in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Thursday.
St. Mary’s had knotted the score by tallying three times in the top of the fifth highlighted by a two-run double by Zac Olles and an RBI double by Deyonci Farley.
St. Mary’s also started to mount a threat in the sixth inning but Sandstone got out of the jam as Patrick Ricker at catcher threw to Christian Doty at third base for the second out. Callicutt, who came on in the sixth, then registered a strikeout to end the game.
Sandstone had built up the 3-0 lead by scoring twice in the first inning sparked by a double by Ricker and once in the third on a homer by Callicutt.
Ricker pitched into the fourth inning for Sandstone notching 10 strikeouts. Zach Colacecchi finished the fourth and hurled the fifth fanning two.
Farley registered a dozen strikeouts in going the distance on the mound for St. Mary’s.
