WATERPORT-  Mary Katherine Thomas, with loving memory the family of Mary Katherine Thomas sadly announce her peaceful passing under the loving care of the staff at Orchard Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Medina, NY on July 12, 2024. Mary was born on April 21, 1924 to Robert and Helen Cover in Columbus OH, but resided most of her adult life here in Orleans County.

Mary is survived by her three children, James (Doris) Thomas, David (Cris) Thomas, Bonnie Ruhlen; grandchildren Richard (Sandy) Thomas, Barbara (Sylvester) Bernhardt, Stacy (Charles) Brown, Debbie (Aaron) Lewis, Danielle (Pete) Spaker, Maria (Eric) Heeg; great-grandchildren Nicole, Sam, Joseph, Jacob, Helen, Tommy, Charlie, Kenadi, Max; nephew Ron (BJ) Thomas; niece Georgia Thomas.

Mary was predeceased by her parents; her loving husband Franklin; brother William Cover; son-in-law Gary Ruhlen; granddaughter Tammy Thomas; nephew Terry Thomas.

Although Mary held many positions with such organizations as the Farm Bureau, Arnold Gregory Memorial Hospital, president of the Waterport PTA, president of the Rebecca Lodge, and District Clerk for the Orleans County Soil and Water Conservation, she is best known for her devotion to her family, community, and church. Both Mary and her husband Franklin, were very active in the Waterport community and the Carlton United Methodist Church. They were also, through their love and support, excellent role models for not only their family but also anyone who knew them. And if all that didn’t keep her busy enough, she could be found enjoying some of her favorite past times such as, baking, sewing, quilting, square dancing, pottery, golfing and traveling. Mary recently celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends and received over 100 birthday cards. Mary will be remembered for her beautiful smile.

The family will receive friends at the Christopher Mitchell Funeral Homes, 21 W. Ave. Albion, Wednesday July 24th 11:00am-12:00pm where her Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12:00pm. Burial will be in Carlton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Carlton United Methodist Church, Albion Baptist Church or the Eagle Harbor Methodist Church, c/o Michelle Howard, 2364 Lake Road, Hamlin, NY, 14464.
