Underclassmen dominate a small Medina wrestling squad as the Mustangs prep for the Niagara-Orleans League home opener against Albion on December 10.

Anchoring the Mustangs lineup is the returning starting quintet of seniors Charles Beach and Nick Doberstein along with juniors Joe Velez and Kalvin Packer and sophomore Brennen Callara.

Last year, Callara took first place honors at the N-O Tournament and went on to place second at the Class C meet and fifth at the Section VI state qualifier.

Velez placed second at the N-O Tournament, third at Class C and fifth at the sectionals while Beach and Packer both placed third at the N-O Tournament.

“With our small numbers it is disappointing for dual meets but we’re working to get better every day,” said Coach Eric Gross whose Mustangs went 2-3 in N-O competition last year.

The Mustangs lineup also includes seniors Bryce Bellan, Jacob Covert, Nick DiPadova and Brooklyn Moore; juniors Austin Bellan, Jake Quackenbush and Dustin Shaffer; sophomores Ryan Kruger, Devin Clevland and Trevor Pittard; freshmen Cody Crane, Austin Cox, Joe Gates and Mitchell Wienke; eighth grader Hunter Kruger and seventh grader Bobby Geiger.
