Another county has been victim of “skimmers,” small devices that can be installed on gas pumps, self-checkout devices, or ATM machines which are not visible to the consumer.

Niagara County Sheriff James R. Voutour sent a news release to notify the public of multiple reported incidents of credit card thefts through “skimming.”

“Once the credit card is run through the skimmer, it scans and stores the credit card data from the magnetic stripe and used to purchase items at another location,” Voutour said in a new release.

The Sheriff’s Departments in Orleans and Monroe counties have also warned of skimmers being detected at the Crosby’s gas stations in Kendall and Hamlin.

Voutour urged people to check their credit card and bank statements and compare those statements with what was purchased. If fraudulent charges are discovered, victims should contact their financial institution immediately to notify them of the charges.

If a police report is requested, please contact your local law enforcement agency, Voutour said.
