Two young Medina wrestlers, Luke Duffina and Dominick Callara, won the NYWAY Youth State Wrestling Championships in competition at Ithaca over the weekend.

Duffina won the 6 and younger 43 lb. bracket. His first match was a tech fall 15-0 against Ryder Reece of Elmira Junior Wrestling club. His second was a narrow overtime win 4-2 against Dylan Newman (the wrestler who beat him last week in the Far West Regionals) from Falconer. His third match was a pin in 2:26 against Chase Houser of Westfield Youth Wrestling Club and in the finals he beat Kadin Cole of Finger Lakes Wrestling Club 9-5.

Callara won the 9-10 50 lb. bracket. His first match was by pin in 58 seconds against Evan Newman of Falconer. His second and final match was an 8-1 victory over Erik Reed of Indian River.

“Luke and Dominick did very well they put a lot of time and effort into training this year that really paid off today” said Medina Coach Jamie Duffina. “What an accomplishment from two very promising young boys.”

Medina was also represented in the state competition by Reece Senske, who went 1-2 on the weekend, and Mitchell Silversmith, who was 0-2.
